Music

Eventually, this section will contain my music reviews. But that is a substantial undertaking so in the meantime this is a list of some of my music collection so I can access it when away from home.  Some I haven't listened to much or at all, mostly music that my husband has collected. I don't have my classical or musical collections in here yet.

10,000 Maniacs

Hope Chest (1983) Wishing Chair (1985) In My Tribe (1987) Blind Man's Zoo (1989)
Our Time In Eden (1992) MTV Unplugged (1993) Love Among The Ruins (1997) Earth Pressed Flat (1999)

I particularly like Natalie Merchant, but 10,000 Maniacs is pretty good without her too.

A Perfect Circle

Mer De Noms (2000) Thirteenth Step (2003)

I haven't listened to this much, but I've been experimenting with different progressive rock groups.

Abba

Forever Gold (1998)

I was surprised to find out how songs I was familiar with by them, probably from radio listening.

Ace of Base

The Sign (1993)

Yeah, so what if it's cheesy pop - I like how happy it sounds. I got this album after liking their videos in the mid-1990s.

Afro Celt Sound System

Volume 1 Sound Magic (1996) Volume 2 Release (1999) Volume 3 Volume In Time (2001)

While waiting for a concert to start, this CD started playing.  I was so entranced I hunted down the bartender to find out the band.  My husband and I were fortunate to see them perform live in Denver at the Gothic Theater.

Afro Cuban All-Stars

A Toda Cuba Le Gusta (1997) Distinto Diferente (1999)

Alana Davis

Blame It On Me (1997) Fortune Cookies (2001) Surrender Dorothy (2003)

I'm not sure how I first heard of Alana Davis or how I got her first CD, but I really enjoy her music. I got to see her perform live when she opened for Jack Johnson at the Denver Paramount Theater.

Alanis Morissette

Jagged Little Pill (1995) Supposed Former Infatuation Junkies (1998)

I got hooked on her first album after seeing her video on MTV.

Ani DiFranco

Ani DiFranco (1990) Not So Soft (1991) Imperfectly (1992) Like I Said (1993) Puddle Dive (1993) Out Of Range (1994)

Not A Pretty Girl (1995) Dilate (1996) Living In Clip (1997) Little Plastic Castle (1998) To The Teeth (1999)

My ex-girlfriend's roommate got me addicted to her albums. I like her earlier work better than the more recent.

Annie Lennox

Medusa (1995)

I really like her videos and got Medusa thinking it had some songs on it that I liked, but sadly it didn't have the ones I was looking for.

Aquabats

Return of the Aquabats (1995) Fury of the Aquabats (1997) Aquabats Vs. The Floating Eye of Death (1999) Myths, Legends & Other Amazing Adventures (2000) Charge!!! (2005)

My husband introduced me to these very quirky albums that get very stuck in my head.  Who couldn't like an album called "Floating Eye of Death"?!

Artie Shaw

Greatest Hits (1996)

Nice jazz album with a lot of classics.

At The Drive-In

In Casino Out (1998)

This is a punk album I started listening to from my husband's collection and found it rather catchy.  It's got a lot of energy mixed with some nice mellow parts - though a bit too much screaming at times.  After At The Drive-In, the singer and lead guitarist went on to The Mars Volta.

Atomic Fireballs

Beastie Boys

bullet Check Your Head

This is a really silly story. I've liked songs of them I've heard since my early teen years, but was embarrassed about it. When my husband caught me listening to one of their songs on the radio, I got flustered and embarrassed and he teased the living daylights out of me. For a year or two, every time Beastie Boys came on the radio, he'd go "It's music for my hip-hop honey!" and insist we listen to it while he teased me and I turned bright red. Several times I'd protest "Hey, I didn't even know that was a Beastie Boys song!" When I had a chance to get free CDs through the BMG club, I quietly asked a friend from IRC what Beastie Boys album he'd recommend, and he suggested a really good one. When the CD arrived I put it on the bottom of the pile, backwards, so my husband wouldn't see it and tease me. But alas, see it he did, and tease me he did. I listened to it in the mornings in my shower, and as it happens that particular CD starts out with a little spoken part. One morning, my husband was downstairs, heard the music start...and speaking along with the words! Busted! As it turns out, he owned every album by the group and had been having a grand old time teasing me! In retrospect, I should have realized how suspicious it was that he could recognize so many of their songs, but I was too busy being embarrassed. He still called me "Hip-hop honey" to tease me occasionally - and then I usually get exasperated and throw pillows at him. Check Your Head

Beatles

bullet Revolver

Beck

Mellow Gold (1994)

In high school I loved the rhythmic beat to the music so I got the Mellow Gold album. The Weird Al polka using a bit from the "Loser" song is hilarious, too.

Black-Eyed Peas

Elephunk (2003)

I liked the energy of the videos and heard bits of their songs all over the radio and tv. That "Let's Get It Started" song was played as background music in all kinds of tv shows, commercials, etc. I was utterly shocked to find out the real, uncensored words to the song is "Let's Get Retarded"! What on earth were they thinking?

Bob Dylan

Before The Flood (1974) Blood On The Tracks (1974) Desire (1975) Street Legal (1978) Greatest Hits #3

I liked the song "Tangled Up In Blue" that I heard on the radio. I randomly picked up a few CDs, but then my friend Subetai stepped in and helped recommend some great albums. I really love Street Legal and Blood on the Tracks.

Cardigans

Product image for ASIN: B000001EP1

First Band On The Moon (1996)

Their song on the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack first got me interested in this group. I don't think I've listened to the CD all the way through yet, though.

Chumbawamba

Tubthumper (1996)

I liked their song that got a lot of radio play. An IRC friend had this CD and didn't particularly care for it, so he sent it to me (very nice of him!).

Crystal Method

Vegas (1997) Legion of Boom (2003)

My friend Jon got me addicted to this album. For a couple years I had the tape in my bathroom to listen to in the shower in the morning. It really helped wake me up and get me ready to face the day.

Deee-Lite

World Clique (1990)

A previous employer introduced me to this happy, bubbly, silly album.

Diana Krall

One Night In Paris (2002)

I haven't listened to this CD at all yet and don't even really know who she is.

My friend Subetai recommended this group, and as I've learned to take all his suggestions, I picked up some Dire Straits music. I really enjoy it and intend to get more CDs by them at some point.

Doors

bullet L.A. Woman (1971)
bullet The Doors Box Set

My parents listened to the Doors when I was growing up, and I just absorbed it. I didn't even really know who they were, until a friend in high school was playing a Doors tape in her car. I was shocked to realize that I knew every song! Since then I've found there are a few bands like that. The Beatles and the Police I also absorbed from my parent's music.

Dream Academy (Nick Laird-Clowes, Kate St John and Gilbert Gabriel)

bullet A Different Kind of Weather

I like their song "Life in a Northern Town". Makes sense, since I'm from a northern state originally!

Drive-By Truckers

This CD came from the BMG record club because I forgot to send back the card saying "No, don't send this to me." I haven't listened to it yet.
